The Crew Rules

The Crew: Quest for Planet Nine · 3-5 players · ~20 min

Overview

The Crew is a cooperative trick-taking game with a space-exploration theme. Standard tricks plus the twist of "each player must win the trick containing their assigned task" creates razor-sharp tension under limited communication.

Components (40 cards)

  • 4 colors × 1-9 = 36 cards — pink / yellow / green / blue.
  • Trump (Rocket) × 1-4 = 4 cards. Trump beats every other color.
  • Whoever holds trump 4 is the Commander.

Mission Flow

  1. Host picks mission level N (1-10) → N tasks are drawn at random.
  2. Starting with the Commander, players draft tasks clockwise, 1 at a time.
  3. Commander leads the first trick. Players must follow the lead suit if possible (otherwise free). Trump beats every other color.
  4. When a trick ends, every task card in it must be won by its owner — otherwise the mission fails immediately.
  5. All tasks ✓ → mission complete. Any failure → the entire crew loses.

Communication

  • When: Each player has 1 comm token per mission. Usable on your turn at the start of a trick.
  • Markers: Reveal one non-trump card with a marker — TOP (highest of that color), MIDDLE (only one of that color), BOTTOM (lowest of that color).
  • Validation: The server validates the marker — false communication is impossible.
  • Note: The communicated card stays face-up in your hand and can still be played normally.

Winning condition

The crew wins together when every task card has been claimed (✓) by its owner. A single failure costs the entire crew the mission. This is a fully cooperative game — outcomes are shared.
