No Thanks! Rules
No Thanks! | 3-7 players | ~20 min
Overview
A small-box card game with surprisingly deep psychology. Every turn is a tug-of-war between "I would rather pay a chip than take this card" and "the pile is only getting bigger - take it now."
Setup
- Shuffle the deck of cards numbered 3-35 (33 cards in total).
- Remove 9 random cards from the game face-down - nobody knows which numbers are missing.
- Deal starting chips based on player count:
- 3-5 players: 11 chips each
- 6 players: 9 chips each
- 7 players: 7 chips each
- Flip the top card of the deck face-up.
On your turn
- Either take the revealed card or place 1 of your chips on it to pass.
- If you take it, collect the card plus all chips currently on it. The same player then reveals the next card and faces the same choice.
- If you pass, play continues to the next player.
- If you have 0 chips, you must take the card.
Scoring
The game ends when the deck is exhausted. Score each player as follows:
- Sort your cards in ascending order and group them into consecutive runs.
- Each run only scores its lowest card. Example:
5,6,7,12,15,16,20scores5+12+15+20 = 52. - Then subtract 1 point for every chip you have left.
The player with the lowest total wins.
Tips
- If a card sits next to a run someone else is collecting, they often gain nothing extra by taking it - you can pass to let chips pile up before they finally claim it.
- Big numbers (30+) should never be taken unless the chip pile on them is large enough to offset the value.
- Chips do double duty as point reduction and pass tokens. Hoard them and you'll get stuck with a big card; spend them and you'll be forced to take one.
